We are aware of the animal studies than show the differences in behavior between males and females that have characterized females as being more nurturing and of males classically exhibiting aggressive, dominant “A”€ type behavior -€“ but how far do these results transfer across to management roles in organizations?

We also know that there are differences in some physical performance aspects of men and women which have to be taken account – especially in occupations where physical strength and stamina is important e g The Army, The Fire Brigade

When we look at some of the more sophisticated Psychometric tests measuring personality characteristics such as 16pf, we do know that there are some gender differences which are significant enough for us to use different norm tables for men or women in order to normalize any comparative results.

So if we accept that there are some gender based differences in managerial style and approach should we then provide different forms of management development training for man and women?

I think that the answer is probably no – because there are other factors that are even more important to consider when we look at the role of a manager, their styles, approaches and when we consider the people that they are managing or dealing with as customers and clients.

The sorts of factors that are more important to consider are these:-

- What are the gender types and likely responses of the customer set for your product or service?

- How good at your managers at understanding personality differences and gender styles in this customer set? Can they deal effectively with diverse types?

- What makes a successful manager in your business from a competency point of view?

- What are the different learning styles of your participants on any training program and how well are you delivering your program to reach and appeal to these different styles of activist, pragmatist, reflector etc?

- What is the culture and style of your organization that you are looking to reinforce and encourage – whether it is adopted my male or female managers is less relevant.

In conclusion whilst accepting that differences do exist in the styles of individual managers, there is a broad spectrum of styles and approaches produced by individual differences rather than by simple gender stereotyping and that there are other factors outlined above which are more significant.

Basically, management development is a term that describes any number of activities that reflect a planned effort to enhance employees’ ability in various individual and team management techniques. Very simply put, management development includes development of skills such as planning, organizing, leading and developing resources.

A key skill for any employees is the ability to manage their own work and control their career path. Highly motivated and self-directed individuals can gain a massive amount of learning and other benefits for their organization by implementing an aggressive management development program.

Management development refers to the process of training and developing managerial talent within a company or organization.

But why do I need to waste time on training and development? Why not just hire the people I need when the time comes?

Nurturing in-house management talent may not seem important, but it is one of the most important aspects of the development of any organization. This is the case for several reasons, some of which are listed below:

1. In-house management development programs give employees the chance to utilize special leadership skills that may posses. These employees will certainly bring an enhanced perspective to management as they will know the working of the company from the ground up as opposed to managerial talent that is brought in from outside the company.

2. Employees will feel more loyal towards the company as they will see that the company is also invested in promoting their career growth and progress.

3. Finally, the overall cost of developing management talent in-house as opposed to trying to recruit talent from the outside world will be much less. A good management development program may cost during the initial setting up phase, but will not cost much more after that. Individuals who have risen up from the management development program will be happy to volunteer their time and mentor other employees. In general, a good management development program will save a lot of money for any organization.

Management development is a process that begins paying for itself very rapidly. You will begin to see the creation of a core team of individuals who are committed to the growth and progress of your organization. In the long run, this can only mean increased efficiency and profitability as the management talent in your organization grows stronger and stronger.

His career as a freelance writer took off once he took up his childhood passion full-time. For the past three years he has been writing on a number of topics and the years spent in boardrooms (and near water-coolers) provides James with a unique insight into the business world.

Most people seem to think that good public speakers are born not made. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most good public speakers have undergone significant training in public speaking.

Even politicians – those great natural orators – have all undergone public speaking training. In the UK Margaret Thatcher was known to use speech coaches. In the US President Bush has consulted actors to help improve his speech delivery.

Whatever your level of public speaking you can improve with a little help from the professionals.

If you do a quick search on the internet for public speaking training you will get thousands of hits from sites promoting everything from self study e-books to 14 day residential courses. It is difficult to decide which is right for you.

Here are six things that you should look for when selecting the training or help that is right for you.

1. Principles of public speaking

Everyone has their own ideas of the basic principles of public speaking. As a minimum look for some mention of defining your goals, researching and deciding on your content, and understanding your audience and their needs.

2. Body language

Body language is at least as important as the actual words you use in your presentation. Some experts claim that the way in which your words are delivered – your posture, stance, gestures and animation – does more to convey your meaning than any words that you actually say.

Body language is a huge subject. A course on public speaking must cover the basic principles.

3. Use of words

Having said that body language is more important than the actual words it is a fact that without the words there is usually no message. Obviously, researching and creating the content of your speech are vitally important. How to create and craft your content are essential in any training.

4. Preparation

If there is one key to success in public speaking it is “preparation, preparation, preparation”. How to prepare is pretty simple. Learning how to do it well and quickly is a key skill. Some topics to look out for include questions such as:

Should you write and use scripts?
When should you use notes and how should you prepare them?
Can you rely on your memory alone?
Should you use audio visual aids?

5. Delivery

Most public speaking training concentrates on telling you how to deliver. And this is probably the right emphasis. Just make sure that the principles of public speaking have been well covered so you know just what your delivery has to achieve.

Most physical courses well video your performance for you to review and critique. It’s a technique that has stood the test of time. If you put your faith in an e-course you should also look for mentor on whom you can practise your public speaking.

6. Conquering nerves

Show me someone who doesn’t feel some degree of nervousness before speaking in public and I will show you someone who doesn’t care about their performance. Nerves are natural and even help to improve our performance.

For many people there is little more stressful in life than the prospect of public speaking. I have known highly confident, articulate people be physically sick before speaking in public. Any course on public speaking is incomplete without some help and guidance on controlling or conquering nerves.

There are literally thousands of topics that could be covered in a course on public speaking. Depending on your own particular circumstances and needs the overall emphasis will change.

Ensure that the training you select covers these 6 fundamental pillars first. You will be surprised how much sub standard training it will help you filter out. You can then select the training that most closely m atches your needs from those that remain.

Keith Longmire specialises in helping small businesses achieve rapid sustainable growth. Public speaking is a pivotal concept.
During a recent internet marketing workshop, I discussed a new communication technology, video email.

Originally posted to my Business Training Resource Blog, in this video I display an actual video email that I sent to a client and take a few questions from the audience.

This video was posted originally at my Business Training Resource site.

I realized with so many different websites, it’s tough to keep things organized. So I’ll be using my personal site to keep everything I that I post in other sites in one place.

Since more of my training and consulting work is moving in the direction of internet marketing, most of my posting will be focused on that subject (however, I should be able to squeeze some other fun stuff in as well).

This is the first in a series of posts about the Five Channels of New Media strategy.

Although events are not a channel, events drive all the other elements of new media:

Business blogs

Voice broadcasting

E-mail marketing

Video (including video e-mail)

Web Conferencing (for webinars and selling)

You’re always welcome to comment.
